Compared to the certain new ones it doesn’t look so bad.

I like these a lot. I think they did a good job at being a funkier 3-series, and I love the fat stubby rear end.
The 325 was the best of them.

If the headlights were more standard E46ish I could deal.

I wouldn’t even mind owning one. They look halfway exceptable with the M package and black kidneys. The predecessor looks much better IMO.

I used to dislike the front end a lot. Now I’m starting to think that it’s pretty much alright.

It’s literally a case of bumper & bonnet swap

I like the idea of RWD compacts, and since BMW was the last fortress of compact RWD-ness I’ll take two pls.

There’s the 1 Series which -thank god- is still rwd. But that’s about to change with the next generation sadly. Most 1 Series buyers probably don’t even know which wheels are driven.

I never knew they made a E46 compact. Neat. The headlights remind me of something Citroën would do.

I think they’ve aged really well. When they first came out I hated the front and liked the back. Now the back looks really dated compared to the front.

The Altezza like tail lights don’t really help. I actually rather like the front end but only with xenons and the kidneys painted black.

The whole car was rather.. quirky. The headlights sure have got something French about them.

The rear headlights have a lot more Japanese than French in them though.
These are the
stock
lights.

Ugh. They are? Does anyone make normal looking red and amber lights for them?

That is one car I wish we had gotten on in the US. Than and the E36 325ti. We only got the 3-8ti. So if you want the hatch you have to take the whimpy 4 cylinder along with it.

The US seems to hate hatch- and liftbacks:( The 318ti had around 143hp which seems reasonable- for European standards. The base 316i only had around 102hp and was just enough for daily driving. A great thing about the E36 compact is that engine swaps are easy to do because it is identical to the sedan to about the a pillar. I still want to kick myself for not buying a 323ti last year.

Yes, it’s actually quite a common aftermarket mod ironically.
